December is here and the holiday season is just around the corner. That means presents to wrap, cookies to bake, and holiday parties to attend and host! It’s a wonderful and joyful time but it can be hectic and stressful. No worries, Organize with Sam is here to help with our tip of the week;

Declutter before you decorate!

Decorations are beautiful, but when they’re paired with unnecessary clutter, they become distracting and can make your home feel restricting. That’s why you always declutter before you decorate. Start by tossing obvious debris. If your dining room table has been doubling as a home office, go through those papers, only filing what you still need. There’s no point in organizing something you're just going to toss out later. Go through the house, putting away dirty laundry, children’s toys, and pet toys. If you don’t have one already, a basket is a perfect way to store pet toys together and out of sight. Once you have decluttered your home, it’s now time to declutter your decorations. This means untangling lights, tossing broken ornaments, and organizing any other chaos that has become of your holiday box.

Now that you're all decluttered, its time to decorate! Each home and family is different, you may have a real Christmas tree in your home or maybe you have a menorah. Either way, Organize with Sam asks you to remember that these things are fire hazards and to please remember to take preventative measures. Between 2012-2016, U.S. fire departments responded to an average 170 home fires that started with Christmas trees per year and an estimated 8,200 home structure fires that were started by candles per year.

If you need extra help getting your home organized this holiday season, don’t forget to get Organized with Sam!
